Imagine you got on a plane a few hours ago and when you land at your destination, it’s still the same time there. So, how do strange time zones affect travelers? Australia has one of the most complex time zones in the world. It is divided into three main time zones:

• Australian Western Standard Time (AWST): UTC+8
• Australian Central Standard Time (ACST): UTC+9:30
• Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST): UTC+10

Some states practice DST here and some stick to the same clock throughout the year. This is one of the weirdest daylight saving time practices.

Also, due to Australia’s huge geography, there are significant differences in sunrise and sunset hours across the country. For example, when it is bright and sunny in the east, it may still be dark in the west.  

3. Eucla 

Eucla is a small town in Australia and it is one of the oddest time zones to know about. This town also does not observe DST and operates 45 minutes ahead of the Australian Western Standard Time (AWST). 

4. Chatham Islands

Located in New Zealand, Chatham Islands is one of the countries with strange time zones. It is 45 minutes ahead of New Zealand’s standard time and observes DST during summer.

5. Nepal 

Nepal has one of the examples of unusual time zone adjustments which sets the country apart from its neighbors. It has a 15 minute offset from Indian Standard Time (IST+5:45). Why does Nepal have a 45-minute time zone? This was done mainly to distinguish itself from India and to set its own identity. Hence the joke, “Nepalis are always 15 minutes late”. 

6. India 

Even though India is a big country, it follows only one time zone. This time zone logic is done purposely so every Indian can follow the same time which is UTC+5:30.

This means it is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. But why does India have a half-hour time zone? This is one of the time zones with 30-minute differences to distinguish between other time zone borders like Pakistan and Bangladesh. 

7. Iran 

Like Nepal, even Iran wanted to establish its unique identity and chose to have its own time zone, which is Iran Standard Time (IRST) UTC+3:30. The country is positioned between other countries that typically use full hour offsets (like Turkey at UTC+3 and Afghanistan at UTC+4). This shows their desire to stay unique. 

8. China 

Like India, even China uses only one time zone throughout the country, which is China Standard Time UTC+8. However, if we go by geography, China should adhere to five time zones but the government didn’t want confusion and wanted to simplify the time zone. The country hasn’t followed DST since 1991.

9. Venezuela

Venezuela is another one of the places with non-standard time zones which is Venezuela Standard Time (VET) UTC-4:30. This makes it one of the few countries in the world that is 30 minutes behind. This was done in 2007 by Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan President to permanently move the country’s time backward. 

10. Western Samoa 

The entire island of Samoa follows the same time zone, which is West Samoan Time UTC+13. In 2011, Samoa shifted from UTC-10 to UTC-11 to align its time zone with its major trading partner, Australia and to be closer to New Zealand. And guess what? This change resulted in Samoa skipping one day entirely. They skipped December 30th, 2011.
